How an AI assistant can run your DNS for you
You describe what you want in ordinary words, and the settings change. Here is what is actually happening in between, and why it is more useful than it sounds.
The hard part was never deciding
Deciding that the console should switch off at bedtime takes about a second. Finding which setting does that, on which profile, without breaking something else, is the part that takes twenty minutes and often does not happen at all.
That gap between knowing what you want and knowing where the switch is has always been the real cost of a powerful settings page. An assistant closes it. You bring the intention; it deals with the mechanics.
What happens when you ask
You say what you want
“Block TikTok on the kids’ tablet until Friday.” Ordinary words, the way you would say it to a person. There is nothing to look up and no particular phrasing to get right.
It works out what you meant
Three things, really: which device, which app, and for how long. It looks at the profiles you actually have to find the one called “kids’ tablet”, rather than guessing.
It makes the change
Not instructions for you to follow — the actual change, applied to your account. Then it tells you in plain words what it did, so you can see it matched what you meant.
If something is ambiguous — you have two tablets, say — it asks which one you meant instead of picking for you.
Things worth asking for
- “Turn off social media on school nights.”
- “Why is this website not loading on the living room TV?”
- “Which device is making the most blocked requests this week?”
- “Set up the new tablet the same way as my son’s phone.”
- “Let YouTube through on the family profile, but nothing else Google.”
The last two are the ones people are surprised by. Copying a whole set of rules from one device to another is tedious by hand and trivial to ask for. And carving out one exception to a broad rule normally means understanding how the rules interact, which is exactly the sort of thing you can hand over.
What MCP is, and why you might care
An assistant on its own can only talk. It can explain how to change a setting, but it cannot reach out and change it, because it has no way to connect to anything outside its own window.
MCP is the standard that fixes that. It is a shared way for an assistant to connect to an outside service and operate it — a set of hands rather than just a voice. The assistant learns what actions the service offers, and it can carry them out on your behalf.
The part that matters to you is the word shared. Because MCP is a common standard rather than something each company invents for itself, the assistant you already use can connect to any service that supports it. You are not stuck with whichever assistant a company happened to build into its own dashboard, and the skills you build up carry across everything else you connect.
Two ways to use this
The simplest is Dex, which is already in your dashboard. Nothing to install, nothing to connect — open it and start typing.
If you already spend your day in an assistant of your own, you can connect that instead and manage your filtering without leaving it. The setup takes a few minutes and the connection guide walks through it.
You stay in charge
You decide what a connection is allowed to do. Read-only, if you just want to ask questions and never have anything changed. Anything that cannot be undone gets a confirmation first, and you can disconnect an assistant at any time without affecting anything else.
Worth knowing too: keeping a record of what your devices look up is off unless you switch it on, so unless you have asked for it there is no browsing history for an assistant to read in the first place.
